Patient teachers are the BEST but the free food and drinks are pretty good loo hehe! I used to hate chemistry when I was in Integrated Programme (IP) Year 3 & 4. My chemistry tutor in IP 4 even advised me not to touch chemistry at JC level. You were super patient and helpful throughout my 2 years in Uptas. More importantly, you believed in me. You helped me to understand Chemistry much, much better.

You were clear and enthusiastic in your teaching and explained it in more simplistic ways to aid understanding. I would recommend all my friends who need help in Chemistry and don’t like it to join ? Throwing back to the times when you could repeat over and over again and slowly teach me concepts without getting upset, I am extremely thankful that I got to know you. I will never forget the extra lessons to help boost our chemistry grade. Since Secondary Three my Chemistry was never too good. I failed Chemistry twice in Sec Three(2015) and got C5 for the other two exams. I decided to join two of my other friends for Uptas Chemistry tuition after getting a C5 for my CA1. Joining this tuition was a wonderful decision as classes with the tutors in Uptas was always extremely fun and enjoyable as well as extremely enriching.

I always left class with more understanding of the Chemistry concepts and answers to my questions. The tutors in Uptas are very dedicated teacher who is concerned about his students’ progress and adopts an effective learning system during his lessons. This includes being technologically savvy, using a projector instead of traditional white board which facilitates our learning as we students are able to see the content on the screen easily as opposed to using a whiteboard, which may be time consuming. Lessons in Uptas are interesting and engaging as the tutors tries his best to simplify chemistry concepts that are difficult to understand for better understanding and show us videos helpful to our learning when necessary such as videos on crystallization so as to let us visualize and understand the process and steps to take instead of just blindly memorizing from textbooks, where the content takes a longer time to sink into our heads. The tutors in Uptas also provides us with useful resources such as concise notes and a laminated periodic table with equations and other content compiled on a single page which allows us to refer to them and study more efficiently especially when exams are near.

Apart from adopting a positive attitude and encouraging us to never give up, the regular practices of worksheets and the provision of challenging questions from other school’s papers also enabled me to maintain a consistent grade of A1 throughout my secondary 4 years. He is also one of the most patient teachers I’ve ever had and encourages us to ask questions whenever in doubt even through platforms such as Whatsapp, and strives to reply to us as quickly as possible with detailed explanations. I definitely owe my great improvement in Chemistry to Dr. Aw as he was the teacher who spurred my interest in Chemistry and made me enjoy learning the subject.

Before entering JC, I was warned by many that A level Chemistry was going to be tough. That was when my sister recommended me to you. I’m a very logical person, things has to clear to me like, How can this tuition help me achieve my A in Chemistry? What resources can the teachers provided, which are superior to those given in school? You made me realise that chemistry was not as challenging and inaccessible as I initially thought to be. I have been to many tuition and learnt from many tutors. Honestly, you are one of a kind. From the bottom of my heart, you are one of the best, if not the best tutor. The summarised chemistry notes are concise and to-the-point, cutting short all the ‘long stories’ in the lecture notes. It is easily comprehensible and provides step by step guidance, making it very clear for the reader to know exactly what is going on. Will you consider publishing an A-level chemistry book compiling all your notes? As I believe they will be in hot demand and will likely provide relief and soothe the anxiety of many other potential chemistry students in the years to come.
All in all, I feel that you are one of the best chemistry teachers I have encountered so far, as you genuinely cared for us and have stimulated our interest in the subject. I still remember coming to you (Dr Aw) after my CT. I did not do well and my concepts were really shaky. It was few months to A levels and I had practically zero understanding of Chemistry and all its related concepts. My first impression of you was- knowledgeable, engaging and very approachable. You were a very dedicated teacher who has the rare ability to teach chemistry in a concise, clear approach. Chemistry has never been easy for me to grasp. And I believe many of your students will agree that they’ve got the edge over their peers in school because of the materials you provided and also of the techniques taught in understanding and answering questions.
My biggest fear was Organic Chemistry. But now, organic chemistry is a sure-score component for me. Your lessons were so fun and interesting that no one ever falls asleep in class. The Chemistry bible was also a very very helpful book which helped us capture the essence of every topic. You taught us “ways to study smart”, especially if I want to excel in an elite school like VJC. I applied this to my prelim revision and it was really helpful. I managed to improve a few grades within a short span and what I can say for certain is without you help, I would be far off from where I am today. Thank you Dr Aw!

Chemistry used to be one of the subjects I hated because it was so tedious and difficult. I remember I first heard about you from my school mates and all they said were, “Join Uptas, Join Ms Tham, you will become a chem beast too”. At that point in time, I was still wondering if what they say is really true. But soon after joining your class, I became just like them and recommending others too. I think your notes are extremely concise and to the point. They highlight the essence of each chapter, and remove the redundant information. And I like that your lessons are heavily structured towards scoring well for exams. Your lessons are always interesting and engaging with use of animations and applets. All in all, you are one of the best, if not THE best chemistry teachers i have ever known. Thank you for staying true to all the good things that have been said about you. They said you knew the syllabus well. You do. They say you make every concept that much easier with your crystal clear explanation. You do. They said you are a passionate teacher with undying love for your students. I have never seen anyone deliver Chemistry lessons with more dedication. What I appreciate the most about you is your patience, and how caring you are towards every student. You always make sure to respond to every question.

I really don’t know how to express my feelings into words, as they will never do justice to the gratitude I have for you. Before attending your classes, Chemistry just felt like a black void of content I was never able to understand. I was unable to fully comprehend the concepts that were taught in school. I realized I’m one student who has booked you for “endless consultations”, hehe 😛 Overall, I have learnt so much from you. You have been a very patient and dedicated teacher, one of the best I had. Thank you for making me fall in love with Chemistry and I actually looked forward to tuition every week to learn new concepts. Though you have only been my chemistry tutor for about a year, indeed it must be said you are one of the most likable teachers around. The first thing that strikes me about is that you are indeed a teacher at heart. You were always so encouraging, and always making efforts to motivate students. I also admire how passionate you are, having late nights to prepare for your lessons, compiling questions for us to do. We really appreciate all these questions, it is really through these practices that pushed my grades up. Despite being our teacher, Ms Tham has still retained her youthful nature and is able to bond with the class on a whole new level. Uptas has really helped me a lot to grapple concepts better and ace exams. Ms Tham is the catalyst to the improvement i have made for my Chemistry subject. Chemistry is so fun and interesting that I have never ever lost interest in it. The lessons are very different from school’s tutorial and lecture system as it goes right into the main gist of JC life, which is to solve A level questions. In my opinion, what truly distinguished Ms Tham’s lessons apart from others was her passion for teaching and love & care for students. The JC chemistry syllabus is a demanding one. On top of that, juggle academics and CCA is no easy feat. But Ms Tham delivered the content in a concise, yet comprehensive manner. In a syllabus where much memory work was required, Ms Tham taught us super learning acronyms. These easy to remember acronyms were catchy and interesting, increasing productivity and funny sometimes. Nearing the exams, Ms Tham would ensure that the weaker students did practice outside of tuition and marked their work as a form of responsibility. This meant extra hours and workload but she still did. That earned my utmost respect for her. The grades speak for itself, I improved several grades from a U during JC1 Mid-years.

I would certainly recommend my friends to join Uptas Learning. It is a unique gift of an individual Miss Tham to be able to present Chemistry in such a simplistic manner. Before I attended Ms Tham’s lessons, I had absolutely no interest in Chemistry. I could not comprehend and appreciate how people could actually do tutorials and understand anything related to Chemistry. I was genuinely, hopelessly, lost. After I joined Uptas, everything changed. Before joining Uptas, I had difficulties summarizing my notes. There is a fear that I might miss out important and “must have” concepts. I would say that for other tuition centres which I’ve went to, it is akin to tearing up money. Here at Uptas, if you put in effort, the As will be yours. Dr Aw is the best tutor, literally. The notes given were concise and clear, making it easy for the students to understand. Dr Aw explains how formula were being applied for different types of questions. He also established the links between various concepts and formulas. This is especially important for solving application questions, where questions were often integrated. Beyond the formulas, Dr Aw imparted the approaches to solving various types of questions, rather than just simply leaving it to the students to grope in the dark. I would say that time is spent much more efficiently compared to figuring out yourself. Questions were modelled after actual A level national papers. Uptas prepared us adequately with a huge question bank. Dr Aw highlights the common pitfalls and ensure correctly identify the focus of the question and hence applying the relevant concepts. Even though it was a class, Dr Aw’s teaching could cater to all levels of students. This was extremely beneficial as I was lagging behind the cohort when I first joined. I definitely recommend Uptas for all students who may be struggling, it is never too late. I joined after CT2 and am already seeing huge improvements in my results due to the clearer conceptual understanding. Thank you for changing my perception and chemistry with chemistry! Dr Aw was a very caring tutor who truly cares for his students, who has a strong grasp in his knowledge for chemistry. I first joined his lessons at the start of Year 6, after scoring U in Promotional Exams. Shortly after starting tuition, I started to pass chemistry tests. This was, of course, much thanks to Dr Aw’s help. He was patient with me, despite my many queries and doubts. After lessons, he always stays back without complaint to help us with our work, doing more than he is required. That aside, I would say that Dr Aw is really very strong in his chemistry concepts, which is transmitted over to me via his super effective teaching style. Dr Aw skillfully explains the intricacies of chemistry, while ensuring that the lesson stays engaging. After attending a few lessons, I had a stronger grasp for concepts, and I knew the key things to memorize instead of being lost in the sea of information. As a result, my chemistry results shot up from U to one of the top. I would say, my concepts are so good now that Chemistry has become a breeze to me. In addition, Dr Aw gives out awesome notes & chemistry bibles. You only need to browse through these notes before the exams to sufficiently refresh your concepts. 5 stars! JC is a period where many of us feel helpless and sometimes afraid. This is due to the intense rigour of the syllabus. But Dr Aw has been supportive to each and everyone of us. His notes are really comprehensive yet succinct. Before attending Dr Aw’s classes, my impression of Organic Chemistry was all about memorizing facts after facts. I did not understand the mechanisms and purely studied using rote learning. However, after attending Dr Aw’s classes, I have developed a much deeper understanding of Organic Chemistry. While Dr Aw has a phD in Chemistry, he has the special ability to simplify complex chemistry concepts.
